While attending Expo West in Anaheim this year, I was interested in tracking new trends in the Paleolithic, also known as the paleo, caveman or stone-age, diet. I wanted to see if the paleo diet was still in full swing at the show, five years after the craze began in approximately 2012.

For those who don’t know, this diet is based mainly on foods believed to have been available to Paleolithic humans. Although there is wide variability around the interpretation of this diet, it is based on avoiding foods that humans started eating after the Neolithic Revolution when humans shifted from hunter-gatherer lifestyles to settled agriculture.

As I walked the show, ice pops popped out at me this year. I came across Paleo Passion Foods, LLC offering all-natural ice pops with no artificial colors, preservatives or added sugar under the Paleo Passion Pops brand name. This paleo friendly brand offers ice pops in seven flavors, including Apple Crisp with flax seeds, Blueberry Pomegranate with green tea and spinach and Pineapple Ginger with chia seeds. These pops also contain highly nutritious superfoods as an added benefit. Additionally, they are kosher and vegan  with no artificial ingredients added.

I also enjoyed seeing Eatpops, which offer flavors that are more typical of cold pressed juices. The seven-flavor line of pops includes Green Detox, Cleanse, Nourish, Restore, Super Detox, Activate and Glow. These pops are considered “Paleo Friendly” with no added sugar.

2016 Expo East Nexty Award Winner, Cave Shake, was also present at the show this year. Cave Shake is a creamy and filling drink with good fats that will give you more sustained energy and help you feel full without carbs. The product is Ketogenic, Paleo, Vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free with no sugar added. It comes in four basic flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Coffee. Fat packs are also offered that can be used to make a shake or fatten your coffee on the go. Just add water, coffee, tea, nut milk or whatever liquid you wish and this powder will dissolve and create a delicious shake. Great for travel.

Since I can’t resist a good cookie, I enjoyed Paleo Prime’s natural grain-free cookies in three flavors that are also Paleo, Gluten Free, Non Dairy and Non Soy. These cookies are made with only 4 main ingredients and designed with energy in mind.

However, I must admit that I was jazzed to run into my favorite paleo brand at the show—San Francisco Bay Area based Caveman Foods. I found the company’s positioning of products by snacking need state quite clever. Caveman offers snacks that are the best cure for your 3 o’clock slump, post workout high protein snacks, healthy road trip companions and for your weekend adventure. My personal favorite is the wild blue nut nutrition bar. The flavor is out of this world, or should I say back in time!
